Homestead Coffee Morning

Mon 13 Nov 2023 10:30 - 12:30 The Common Knowledge Centre, V95DK38

What makes a house a home? Can we re-imagine the design of the home around design traditions and stories of the past?

As part of our four day 'Homestead' project supported by the Design and Craft Council of Ireland, you’re invited to join us for a cuppa alongside renowned artists, makers and growers within the fields of design, architecture, textiles, furniture, folklore and storytelling. Together, we’ll explore the lessons that tradition can offer contemporary visions of a joyful home. Tea, coffee and treats will of course be provided.

About the Homestead Project

Our coffee morning is part of The Homestead Project taking place from 13 - 17 November as part of Irish Design Week. This 4 day interdisciplinary residency of renowned home makers at Common Knowledge will be asking 'what makes a house a home?. From the 13 - 17 of November we are bringing together eight artists, makers and growers within the fields of design, architecture, textiles, furniture, folklore, storytelling and food will come together for a week of research, skill sharing and learning at the Common Knowledge Centre.

Why? The traditional home in Ireland would have been designed with the hearth central to the house. This did not change for centuries until the TV came into our homes in the 1960's. But still we sat around the same TV and fireplace and exchanged stories and opinions. Now in the last 10 years tablets and laptops have replaced the TV and passive home no longer require stoves, and we sit in separate rooms focusing on separate forms of entertainment. With this, the intergenerational gatherings and the passing down of stories and folklore are being lost.

All are welcome
