Introduction to PermaQueer's Regenerative Design with Toad Dell

Innovation and transformation has always been fringe, on the edge and within so-called “queer” spaces and Queer theory is now helping steer permaculture into increasingly diverse and equitable outcomes. Regenerative design has so much to offer in terms of tangible systems design support to Queer and other diverse and vulnerable communities. Queering the pathways laid before us has never been more important.
About PermaQueer...
PermaQueer as an organisation was dreamed up by Toad and Guy during the 2019 Covid lockdowns in Naarm (Melbourne) Australia. The two had done a Permaculture Design Course (PDC) with Delldint Flemming and thought
“while a lovely idea, not sure it can do much towards anything important” - famous last words!
When food systems and housing security fell apart during the incoming lockdowns, what they thought was a quaint way to look at the world quickly became a source of security that was lacking for much of their community. What started off as a wholesome gardening and community practice quickly became something that fed themselves and offered security beyond even themselves in a time of insecurity. From that PermaQueer was born with the goal of helping bring those skills into vulnerable communities where appropriate. PermaQueer quickly picked up traction getting a license with Ted for the first ever TedXPermaQueer. It was there that the team at PermaQueer was met with their first real challenge when yarning with indigenous scholar Tyson Yunkaporta who asked “are you queers doing permaculture or are you queering permaculture?”. What hit like a bolt of lightning helped PermaQueer shift in how it started to do it’s work, now using frameworks from Permaculture and Queer theory to also help others in their own regenerative dreaming.
About Toad Dell...
Toad is an Irish/English settler living on unceded land of the Kombumerri People. Co-founder of PermaQueer, former board member of Permaculture Australia and current youth ambassador, Small Giants MBE Alumni and community organiser. They are deeply committed and passionate about using permaculture education to help break up the hegemony and reliance upon cultural systems of violence and use queer theory, trauma informed design and ecological systems thinking in pursuit of this goal. Their work exists in the intersection of community, economy and ecological health, and justice working on projects that restore health and resilience to all components, not one at the sake of the others.
About Queer Sheds...
Building practical skills and queer community, Queer Sheds is an idea inspired by the Men’s and Women’s Sheds movements, which have had a huge impact in building grassroots community in Ireland through skill sharing. The first Queer Shed in the world was established in Ireland as a pilot in Clare in 2024. Since then, we’ve been connecting with other groups to support them in starting their own sheds.
