What it is
A hands-on introduction to working with lime for traditional stone and masonry. The day covers the essentials of lime pointing and lime plastering, with a focus on practical skills your group can use for small repairs on community buildings and heritage spaces, while keeping walls breathable and performing properly.
What you will do on the day
- What lime is, how it behaves, and when to use it (and when not to)
- Tools, PPE, and safe set-up
- Preparing work properly: raking out joints, assessing backgrounds, and managing suction and moisture
- Mixing mortar and plaster, understanding workable consistency and timing
- Hands-on practice: applying lime pointing and base coats
- Intro finishing techniques for both pointing and plastering
- Wrap-up: curing and drying behaviour, protection, aftercare, and planning a realistic small repair locally
What you will leave with
- Confidence in the basics: preparation, mixing, application, and finish
- A simple guide to mortar and plaster types, with clear do’s and don’ts
- Practical understanding of time, weather, and conditions needed for good results
- A small-repairs approach your group can realistically apply back home
